Citalopram is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) most commonly known under the brand name of Celexa. It is prescribed to treat mental depression and works by increasing the activity of serotonin in the brain. Before taking Celexa you need to weigh the risks that come along with taking this drug against the benefits you are likely to experience. Some medical and health conditions can prevent you from taking citalopram, including pregnancy (this drug can decrease the survival rate and slow down the growth of the fetus), allergies to any substances, breastfeeding (citalopram can pass into breast milk). Citalopram should be used with caution in children diagnosed with depression and older adults. The latter are more likely to have more serious side effects and should therefore be prescribed a lower dosage of the drug. Tell your doctor if you are currently taking any other medicines as a dangerous drug interaction is possible. One of the possible consequences is the development of serotonin syndrome, characterized by such symptoms as diarrhea, fever, poor coordination, shivering, sweating, twitching, trembling, shaking, being extremely excited, confused etc. These symptoms need to be reported to your health care provider the moment you experience them.
